厦门大学附属中山医院始建于1928年，由爱国华侨和地方知名人士为弘扬中山先生“天下为公，造福社会”的精神捐资兴建而成。时任厦门大学校长、医学专家林文庆博士出任首任院长。为福建省唯一985工程院校厦门大学的首家附属医院。历经80余载中山人的拼搏进取，已发展成为一所集医疗、教学、科研、预防保健于一体的三级甲等综合性医院和国家重点大学研究型附属医院。
医院年门、急诊量超过300万余人次，年收住病人近6万人次，编制床位2500张；设有38个临床学科、10个医技科室、1个分院、2个分部、5个社区卫生服务中心；拥有消化内科、心血管内科两个国家临床重点专科，厦门市心脏中心、厦门市临床检验中心、厦门市消化疾病诊治中心和厦门大学消化疾病研究所、厦门大学器官移植研究所、厦门市老年疾病康复研究所及厦门市肿瘤分子诊断与靶向治疗重大科技平台等重要医学中心和科研平台；为国家卫生部心血管疾病介入诊疗培训基地、中华医学会消化内镜培训基地、福建省超声医学培训基地；是福建省首批获卫生部审核批准开展人体器官移植技术（心脏移植）的医院之一。
医院现有教职员工3000余名（其中高级专家400余名，硕士、博士以上学历人员400余名，硕士生导师和博士生导师70余名）。医院雄厚的技术力量和合理的人才梯队推动医院医疗教学科研工作阔步前进。医院获各级课题资助300余项，包括国家“863”和“973”子课题、国家自然科学基金、国家“十一五”科技支撑计划等国家级课题40余项，获部、省、市各级科技进步奖40余项，发表SCI论文100余篇，获国家专利40余项，科研项目总量在全省名列前茅。在大量科研成果的有力支持，医院每年开展大量临床新技术、新项目，先后在本市率先开展心脏移植、肝脏移植、肾脏移植等高难度临床手术，填补了大量技术空白，让广大厦门人民足不出户就可以享受到优质、安全、高效的医疗服务。
