I developed a software program that used spectral analysis and the Fourier transform to measure the thickness of lacquer applied to both the inside and outside of beverage cans. I proved the concept initially using Microsoft Excel to perform the measurements and then implemented the program using C++. The solution used a fibre optic sensor mounted onto an adjustable arm. The can could be rotated in place and the arm could be moved vertically and it could also rotate to allow all areas of the surface of the can to be analysed and produce a lacquer thickness heat map. The dimensions of the can were also captured by the program. The software application controlled the arm and the rotating head to avoid collisions with the can.I also developed a software program using a white dot camera system to analyse artificial patellas for use in replacement knee joints.Formerly TRAC Measurement Systems.

I worked for TRAC initially during the summer holidays whilst studying for my Electrical and Electronics Engineering Degree at the University of Sheffield. I was tasked with developing an ink dot colour recognition vision system with cheap off-the-shelf hardware. I developed an application written in Visual Basic and utilised a £30 web camera. Once the concept was proven I rewrote the application in C++ to improve performance and allow easier integration with TRAC's existing software suite. Following the summer placement TRAC offered me a Software Engineering apprentice role whilst also completing the final two years of my Electrical and Electronics Engineering Degree at the University of Sheffield.Formerly TRAC Measurement Systems.
