I volunteered as a data collector for an ongoing research Smoking Prevention Project between Staffordshire University and the University of Leeds into smoking cessation. The position involved working with other data collectors on the Smoking Project in Schools participating in the research. Duties consisted of collecting data from the students, gained by the use of a Carbon Monoxide Monitor as well as collect and collate completed smoking questionnaires.

During this time I gained a shadowing placement with Clinical Psychiatrist Dr Sami Timimi and other mental health staff. I learned some of the NHS and CAMHS referral procedures and was able to observe a number of patient therapy sessions. At the weekly team meetings I was able to witness the discussion of client cases amongst various staff members. Further to this I helped deliver a Nurtured Heart Approach Programme in order to aid the parent/child relationship and increase the wellbeing of the family.

During this time, I was able to visit schools with the Team Members, to give talks on youth offending; and drug and alcohol abuse.Required to input data from client files onto the YOS database.Create youth offending and psychological profiles using YOS specific documents in order to create a brief overview on each new client whilst I was there.Involved in deciding whether or not referrals to the West Area YOS were appropriate.Able to witness numerous court proceedings of young offenders, and become involved in discussions between them and the YOS team members assigned to them if court hearings resulted in custodial sentencing.
