As the State Member of Parliament I had a broad range of duties that fell into two broad categories comprised of parliamentary responsibilities and electorate responsibilities.To fulfil these roles competently I was required to exhibit advocacy, leadership, management, negotiation and communication skills of the highest order to effectively represent the residents and community that I was entrusted to serve. My research and analytical skills were frequently employed in negotiating beneficial outcomes to the problems and concerns of broad cross section of clients and the community.I provided a direct link between constituents, Executive Government and the Parliament. To facilitate this role I established and managed my electorate office and support staff. I facilitated meetings and worked with community groups to develop acceptable solutions to key issues of concern to them. The skills required to fulfil this function included high level interpersonal skills such as advocacy, communication, negotiation and lobbying.Understanding and debating a broad range of legislation and other issues dealt with by the Parliament and providing an effective representational link between constituents and the Parliament through communication strategies including mass media, letters, talking to large numbers of people, both privately and in public forums, and, perhaps most importantly of all, listening and researching the required topic. I was a member of the Finance and Administration Committee of the Legislative Assembly as well as Member of the Ministers Police and Community Safety Policy committee, the Local Government and Resilience Policy Committee, Chair of the Queensland Parliament Friends of Taiwan and Chair of the Queensland Parliament Friends of China.
