Working within the Planning and Environment Unit at the City Projects Office (CPO) for Brisbane City Council, Nicholas is currently assessing environmental impacts and compliance of capital expenditure projects of varying significance to the Brisbane community.Nicholas carries out detailed environmental and planning assessments for all prospective projects to determine potential environmental and planning risks and ultimate feasibility in some instances. He provides advice on Environmental permits, approvals and obligations to the project managers, who facilitate funding and program approval to proceed into detailed design. Nicholas prepares or assists in the lodgement of all environmental approvals and permits (State and Local) prior to writing or reviewing construction documentation for the projects if the works proceed. Once works have commenced he provides ongoing advice and undertakes regular audits to determine compliance with Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs), Erosion Sediment Control Plans(ESCP), current legislation and all valid approvals and permits. Specialised activities Nicholas is engaged to undertake include; Pre-construction Fire Ant Inspections, technical environmental information requests (to formulate responses to community complaints), environmental construction advice, preparing construction environmental management plans, erosion and sediment control auditing and vegetation removal notifications.

I am an Environmental Advisor and have regularly assessed environmental compliance across all site within the Licensed Construction Area for one of the largest infrastructure project within Queensland for the last 3 years. CNI is a private company wholly owned by the Queensland Government and was established to project manage three of Queensland’s largest infrastructure projects with total project costs in excess of A$4 Billion.The projects CNI managed under the PPPCo agreement included Airport Link, Northern Busway and the Airport Roundabout Upgrade. I regularly liaised with regulatory authorities, stakeholders, contractors and the community to identify and manage issues of concern or compliance.My key responsibilities were● Monitoring compliance with the Coordinator General’s conditions, project deed and legislation● Inspecting compliance on site regularly and during various high risk activities, particularly forErosion and Sediment control along waterways and air quality management techniques.● Analyzing environmental monitoring data, incidents and complaints.● Investigating complaints and impacts of proposed work.● Reviewing project documentation; Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), Area Environmental Plans (AEPs), Site Environmental Plans (SEPs), non compliance/ incident reports and monthly reports.● Observing independent compliance audits on the contractor.● Attending community liaison groups.● Liaising with various stakeholders and regulatory authorities.

Connell Wagner merged with Africon and Ninham Shand to form what is now known as Aurecon.I worked as a Graduate Engineer with the Water and Environment team. Tasks included; water sensitive urban design, erosion sediment control plans, sediment pond sizing, formulating waste management plans, environmental desk top studies for proposed projects, report writing and editing, maintaining various calculation spreadsheets and carrying out administrative and marketing tasks for the team.

As part of my studies at Griffith University I completed a Thesis project through the Industry Affiliates Program (IAP) in my final year. The title of my thesis was "Bioremediation of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Soil". This project was funded and carried out at Butler Partners. It involved a literary review and laboratory analysis of soils with high concentrations of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) which were treated by various biological methods. The experimental biological treatments were tested over a short period of time and soil samples for send regularly for analytically analyse at a NATA accredited laboratory. The results, methodology and findings were compiled into a report for the company and the University. Furthermore this was then presented at an expo day.

As a student still completing my studies at university, I worked at MWH Global as a student engineer in the Planning and drafting team. I carried out tasks such as mapping (using MapInfo and Arc GIS) and ongoing data entry for the Qld water grid and infrastructure upgrades. In my time at MWH Global I also worked with the Environmental Engineering department completing similar mapping tasks. Furthermore I started report writing/ editing and carrying out some site inspections throughout South East Queensland with the project managers checking off completed works (particularly landscaped assets) against designs.
