The volume of patients I saw while rotating through the Naval Air Station was the biggest boost to my optometric career. Seeing only active duty patients didn’t allow for much disease related learning, but it did provide an excellent opportunity to improve on exam efficiency as well as contact lens fittings. A large amount of patients were interested in.

The amount of learning while at Hu Hu Kam Memorial Hospital was exponential. To date, this rotation is where I improved the most as a clinician. By far, the most prevalent disease I encountered was diabetes. Weekly, we would refer to local OMD's for treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy, or scheduling closer-than-normal follow-ups for patients.

Rotating through the university's optometry clinic was a great learning experience. My favorite part of that rotation was going to the homeless shelter in Tustin on Monday's to provide eye exams. The people were so grateful, kind and hopeful for a better future.I also enjoyed the variety of clinical experiences such as being in the contact lens department.
