Aaliyah grew up in a low-income Southern California community (Riverside…Los Angeles, ugly cousin.) Though her childhood was sometimes traumatic, she always went out of her way to make others and those around her laugh. She made the long trek from Riverside to Los Angeles to pursue a career in writing for the screen or, as she calls it, profiting off her trauma. Her identity as a Black and Mexican woman sings in all her writings as she aims to change harmful and stereotypical stories of her community into ones full of laughter and depth. Aaliyah has obtained a BA in screenwriting at the California State University of Northridge and her Master of Fine Arts in Writing for Screen and Television at USC'S highly competitive School of Cinematic Arts, where she was a recipient of the George Lucas Family Foundation Endowed Student Support Fund for Diversity, as well as an Annenberg Graduate Fellow. Aaliyah is currently a 2023 BlackBoy/Girl Writes mentee.
