About Aaron Hill

Colonel Aaron Hill is the Deputy Department Head and Professor U.S. Military Academy in the Department of Civil & Mechanical Engineering, responsible for teaching, scholarship, and leadership at the Academy and Department levels. He was commissioned as an Engineer Officer from the U.S. Military Academy in 1997, where he majored in civil engineering. He has served in various assignments worldwide, including Afghanistan, the Sinai Peninsula, Bosnia, and Croatia. COL Hill served in the department from 2006-2009 and again from 2016 to the present. Along the way, he earned master’s degrees in engineering management (Missouri S&T) and civil engineering (Virginia Tech) and a Ph.D. in civil engineering (The University of Texas at Austin). He carries the academic rank of Associate Professor and has taught several courses in the civil engineering curriculum ranging from structural engineering and steel design to infrastructure systems and construction management. Each spring, he co-teaches Project Management Professional (PMP) prep classes to the West Point community. His research interests include topics in structural engineering and engineering education. He serves as the ASCE Chair of the Committee on Education and the Vice Chair for the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Partners in Education Committee. A portion of his cadet development is dedicated to service as the Head Officer Representative for the Army West Point Men’s Basketball team. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Virginia, an ASCE Fellow, and a Project Management Professional.

Responsible for the health, morale, and welfare of 41 assigned Department of the Army Civilians, military, local national and private security personnel. Executed over 35 Afghan National Police and Afghan National Army projects and 1 Military Construction Special Operations Forces project spread throughout the 3 geographically challenged provinces of Kunduz, Takhar, and Baghlan. Planned, coordinated, and supervised over 200 ground movements, 1,500 site visits, and 5 Engineering Site Assessments without incident. Integrated efforts with US Brigade Combat Teams, Coalition Mentor Teams, Department of State, US Agency for International Development, German Provincial Reconstruction Team, and Afghan Provincial and District Officials to gain and leverage support for projects. Interviewed 52 Afghan contractors to identify the truly qualified local companies in support of the National Defense Authorization Act 886 “Afghan First” Program. Developed a monthly training program for Afghan engineers and contractors to improve safety and project management.
