Examined the complex agribusiness (and US domestic and foreign) policy and regulatory environment. Students survey governmental policies and regulations, and analyze their effect on cultures, society and local businesses in agriculture. The class explores the process by which policies and regulations are made and enforced. Students address ethics, government structure, stakeholder issues and major policy debates on water and land use, immigration, GMO's, pesticides, food safety and environmental regulation.

Central Coast, California

I was a founding partner in a law firm representing landowners, businesses and entities involved in our dynamic agricultural industry. I guided property owners in Monterey County through the entitlement process, provided analysis on property rights and advised on real property legal matters. I communicated with agencies, decision-makers and non-governmental organizations in formulating public policy strategies on agricultural land use, general plan requests, community & specific plans, tentative maps, subdivisions and land use permits. I analyzed agricultural, business and tax implications in business and real property transactions. I formed, organized, merged and dissolved business entities.

In utilizing my agricultural business background, I planned, organized, drafted and facilitated corporate and real estate transactions. I advised property owners in Monterey County on land use and agricultural issues before local government agencies, the Attorney General’s Office, Department of Fish & Game, and other various public agencies. I advised clients on the tax effects of property and business transactions. I represented many parties in real estate transactions, which included drafting purchase and sale agreements, preparing construction and architectural design contracts and reviewing preliminary title reports and underlying documentation.

I worked for a law firm primarily focused on representation of agricultural clients, cooperatives and businesses. The firm was located in two places: Sacramento and Hanford, California. The firm was heavily involved with legislation and politics that impact the agricultural businesses. In my first year out of law school, I primarily acted as a research attorney on various agriculture, business and real estate related matters.
