Profile bio

About Aaron Kramer

I am a sculptor/painter/inventor/teacher making artwork in Santa Monica, California. I have taught Art and Tinkering to kids from preschool adults. Additionally I teach teachers how to use powertools, safely passing on that knowledge to children. I have been professionally selling my sculptural work on a commission basis directly to Designers, Architects, restaurants, hotels and individual collectors for almost 30 years. During this time I have expanded my teaching from individual workshops with kids and adults to full blown Tinkering Summer camps for kids ages 6 through 15. Along the way I have shared my creative vision with an emphasis on working with reclaimed materials, because it is my core belief that “trash is the failure of imagination.” It is with children that there is hope for our future. Stay tuned for the next chapter as my children move through high school and beyond. Owner

Urban Objects

By exploring the intersection between the found and fabricated in my sculptural work I seek a deeper understanding of the transcendent nature of ordinary objects. My work is often of a woven nature. Street sweeper bristles or reclaimed hardwoods are woven over a welded steel armatures creating a skin. Whether skinning an object or melding together disparate materials into surprising new ways, I am excited by the process of reinvention. At the core of this sensibility is the belief that “trash is the failure of imagination”.

Teaching Contemporary Crafts

Crafts Teacher

Urban Craft Center, Rediscover Center, Cafam, Hands On Third

My teaching experience parallels my professional working career as an artist as well as my time as a Father. After college I worked as a graphic designer and I taught Publication Design at a community college on the side. I have taught entire design firms how to use a Macintosh for the first time, constructing curriculum specific to their needs. For the first 10 years as a full-time artist I sold my work wholesale directly to stores, galleries and museum shops. The next 10 years I traveled the country participating in the most exclusive retail craft and fine art shows in the US. During that time I was also active in bringing art to my kids’ schools. I was asked to create a mini studio on the campus of the 10th Street preschool where I integrated my art into the Reggio Emilia-type curriculum. After many projects the culmination of preschool was the creation of a 20 foot tall Eiffel Tower in the school yard made entirely from cardboard. As my kids moved into Elementary school I followed along. Projects included vehicles made from recycled materials, Archimedean solids made from cereal boxes, masks from milk jugs and collage/memory boxes. For the last 3 years I have been selling my work on a commission basis directly to Designers, Architects, restaurants, hotels and individual collectors. During this time I have expanded my teaching from individual workshops with kids and adults to full blown Summer camps for kids ages 6 through 15. Along the way I have shared my creative vision with an emphasis on working with reclaimed materials, because it is my core belief that trash is the failure of imagination. And within kids lies the hope for our future.

Bicyclist/Explorer

Circumnavigation Of The Usa

From 8/88 to 9/89 I circumnavigated the United States on a bicycle. 11,500 miles later I circled back to my creative soul. My journey was the beginning of my professional career as an Artist. After college I travel through Europe on a bicycle and felt I knew parts of France better than my own country. The seed was planted and for the next 3 years it was my goal. I worked as a Graphic Designer for 2 years and "cut my teeth" on one of the first Macintosh computers in town. 2 years in I left and started my own firm. I also did some Mac training. After a year I had saved $10,000 and it was time to get on the road. From my childhood home in Park Forest, Illinois I set out South and East. 35 miles into the trip I was assaulted by horrible rain and headwinds. I took refuge in a motel while the enormity of what I was embarking upon washed over me.
