Measurement Automation Consultant
I design and implement measurement, data logging and control systems to support laboratory bench and pilot scale experiments. I design software which can run indefinitely, have responsive user interfaces and are easily expandable. Some technology used includes LabVIEW, National Instruments Hardware, Horiba gas analyzers, Aalborg mass flow controllers, thermocouples, and serial bus connected instruments. I also provide support for extending and maintaining legacy systems.
Measurement Automation Consultant
I designed and implemented measurement, data logging, and control systems to support customer needs. This work included project effort estimation, software architecture design, user interface design, measurement hardware selection, implementation, and deployment at the customer site. Work also included refactoring and upgrading existing measurement solutions.
Embedded Software Engineer
I was responsible for developing embedded firmware for Lexmark's hardware products. I worked within a small self organized team within a much larger team sharing a common code base and build infrastructure.
Research Engineer
While at this position I was responsible for architecting, building, and maintaining all Labview code for the department. To support this process I implemented a source code control solution (Subversion). Hardware I used includes NI Compact FieldPoint, mass flow controllers, pumps, relay controls, PLCs, gas volume analyzers, thermocouples, and other industrial transducers.

The office work consisted of analyzing lab test results, keeping track of costs and product schedules, and communicating with vendors. While at Lexmark, I was responsible for the motor systems for the highest production volume laser printing product. This work involved balancing the design goals of our product team with the requirements of external motor vendors. I was responsible for qualifying all aspects of these motor systems for use in mass production. This involved among others: designing and building life tests; analyzing a motor's electrical, mechanical, and thermal characteristics; performing print quality analysis correlated to motor and gear train motion quality; and determining that all of these characteristics would stay within acceptable bounds during production.I worked from start to finish on a project to introduce sinusoidal commutation to the brushless motors used in all of our laser printing products. I also earned a patent for this work. The project involved learning VHDL for prototyping and eventually writing code used to implement the new technology in production. The new commutation algorithm reduced acoustical noise, and increased the operating efficiency of the motor systems. I designed and built an automated motor tester from scratch using Labview to interface with Agilent oscilloscopes. The system used a plugin style architecture to allow new tests and data reduction methods to be configured and added at run-time. Show less
Head Lab Teaching Assistant
I presented weekly lab lectures and conducted lab sessions with 36 freshmen students. I also worked to improve educational materials and student lab procedures, and graded weekly student lab reports.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
I redesigned parts for steel mills and slitters using CAD software. I also managed various plant improvement projects including a $100,000+ warehouse upgrade.
