Market landscape analysis in Cardiometabolic Diseases (CMD)

Screened for the presence of ancient bacterial and viral pathogens in archaeological human and animal remains from the past 1000 years, with a focus on Europe. Reconstructed and studied genomes of three major human pathogens, including the causative agent of leprosy.PI: Prof. Tom Gilbert• Worked with various bioinformatics tools to screen 1200+ metagenomic DNA datasets/samples for traces of ancient pathogen DNA (bacterial, viral).• Led, designed, and managed 3 of my own projects investigating pathogens at the genome level. • Co-authored 9 peer-reviewed scientific papers published during this time, several papers forthcoming.• Stakeholder management (museums, curators, archaeologists): wrote ethics applications for sample collecting, gave presentations, communicated results, wrote summary reports.• Co-organised a three-day online workshop (SPAAM2) and co-created a thriving online community for early career researchers working in ancient metagenomics (300+ members on Slack).•Communicated research through guest lectures and conference presentations.

Studied ancient bacterial pathogen genomes recovered from archaeological human remains from the Americas, specifically the causative agents of tuberculosis and typhoid fever. PI: Prof. Johannes Krause• Produced two lead-author peer-reviewed papers published in scientific journals (Nature Communications; Nature Ecology and Evolution) and one book chapter.• Worked with a wide range of bioinformatics tools to analyse bacterial genomes.• Processed 400+ samples in the lab for DNA sequencing (Illumina) and worked with advanced molecular techniques.• Responsible for training and supervising a master’s student lab work for one year, they successfully defended their thesis.• Communicated scientific findings through conference presentations and interviews with journalists for written media and radio.• My PhD research was covered by The Washington Post and The Atlantic, amongst others.
