I first realised I wanted to do a criminology degree during sixth form when I decided to do forensics as one of my A-Levels. This subject fascinated me and sparked my interest in criminology. During a work experience week I spent some time with West Midlands Police which was a brilliant experience which helped me decide what area of the police I wanted to go into. I liked seeing the evidence and CCTV the most. After A-Levels I decided to do a degree in criminology and criminal justice in the hope it would aid me in finding a job in that field in future. The topics we studied in my degree fascinated me. My favourite being: victims and offenders, theories in the criminology world and policing and society. These surrounded various ideas like crime prevention techniques in society and theories explaining why an individual may turn to crime. Throughout my degree I enjoyed being surrounded by my classmates and being able to take part in group work however, I also was able to overcome challenges independently and excel under the pressure of deadlines and time constraints. During this I realised that I had a particular interest in why offenders commit their crimes and rehabilitation. My interest in rehabilitation stemmed from another work experience week I completed in Wolverhampton Prue Earle House Probation Service. I thoroughly enjoyed this work experience and it opened my eyes to the numerous agencies involved within the probation service and how these all benefit offenders in different ways. This appealed to me because it was evident how much of a positive impact the probation officers were making on an individual and also how important probation is in regards to public protection. Throughout university I worked 2 jobs at the sametime as my degree. Shelf stacking at sainsburys allowed me to learn to work at a fast pace and complete what work I was given for my shift time, it was a very independent job which required me to focus alone for periods of time. Alongside this I was a barmaid at a local pub. This job increased my confidence and social skills massively as it is a sociable job and I thrive off working in a fast paced pub with an often colourful environment. This taught me to deal with both the good and bad sides of customers and also allowed me to use multiple skills during one shift. Such as, dealing with complaints, table service on large tables, working bar on a busy Friday, waitressing skills, making desserts and stock counting. Working the two jobs and studying gave me good time management skills.
