Assistant Marine Officer
In this role I work with the HIWWT marine team on a range of projects:- I coordinate Shoresearch which is an intertidal survey project with data gathered by trained citizen scientists, I train and recruit these volunteers in addition to organising and leading surveys around the Hampshire and Isle of Wight coastline. I also enter and administer the data collected.- I help to coordinate Seasearch which is another citizen science project, this time using volunteer divers to collect subtidal data. I help to train volunteers to 'Seasearch observer' level, supervise the dive days and take part in dives as a volunteer when I'm not working! I validate and enter data from the surveys which is passed on to Natural England.- I assist with the Solent Seagrass project run by the Trust, carrying out intertidal surveys and boat surveys to map seagrass beds in our area. I then process the data and input this into GIS to make maps which are used by the Southern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority to protect seagrass beds from destructive activities under European law.- I assist on the Making Waves project, helping to run outreach events, taking schoolchildren to the beach and going into schools to educate young people about the marine environment. I also help to run Undersea Explorers sessions, teaching children to snorkel in a safe pool environment, filled with educational life like marine props.- I do marine advocacy work including giving talks and generally inspiring and educating the public about local marine life. I set up and manage the HIWWT living seas blog, posting content about our work and local marine life and also featuring guest blogs. I also update the Trust and my own twitter page to promote awareness of our work and marine issues.
