I was hired by Dr. Fabrisia Ambrosio to complete the aims of an industrial grant investigating Klotho hormone’s role in reversing sarcopenia and promoting enhanced skeletal muscle tissue regeneration. Throughout my experiences, I acquired new skills in cell culture, imaging techniques, such as fluorescent microscopy and TEM, and small animal surgeries, such as cardiac puncture and contractile testing. I also improved the work environment, introducing a novel evaluation metric, the four-limb endurance test, and rewriting protocols for streamlining commonly used experiments, including the protocols for the in situ contractile testing apparatus so as to make analysis easier. Furthermore, in my time at the lab, I trained five undergraduate students and published two manuscripts including one with another collaborator. I also attended multiple conferences, talks and poster presentations, winning awards at two events. Before I left to start my Master’s program, I was able to secure additional funding in an addendum grant submitted to the original industry, Boehringer Ingelheim.

Under guidance from Dr. Bryan M Hooks, I investigated the role of interneuron subpopulations within motor cortex on the acquisition of new motor skills. I learned to handle rodents for behavioral studies, harvest and prepare cortical slices, and fluorescent imaging. Over my two years, I earned the Honors College Health Sciences Fellowship Award, which was a $5000 stipend to conduct independent research investigating the role of PV+ and SOM+ motor cortex interneuron subpopulations in learning new motor skills. At the conclusion of this experience, I submitted a senior thesis on our findings and qualified to graduate with honors distinction.
