An internal wall was also stripped back to exposed brick to create a feature of the only known building that contains bricks manufactured at the short-lived Carnamah Brick Works in 1930.The development and improvement of The Exchange was supported by community members, CBH Group, Shire of Carnamah, Lotterywest, Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal, and the Australian Government's Building Better Regions Fund. The Exchange is one of the key sites used by North Midlands Project for the delivery of its annual Act Belong Commit Community Strengthening Program. Undertook the removal of five truckloads of false walls, broken doors, floor coverings, suspended ceilings and the entire removal of four added-on rooms. Identified the original location of walls, doors, fireplaces and windows; developed plans to restore the building to its original configuration; created brief for work to be done; identified, hired and managed suitable contractors; and sourced pressed metal, windows, heritage glass, doors, handles, locks, tiles, brass light switches, light fittings, architraves and skirting boards from across WA, SA, VIC, NSW, QLD, and overseas.The building is now being adaptively reused by North Midlands Project as a gallery, function venue, offices, and has on-site accommodation for staff and artists. It was officially opened as part of the Australian Heritage Festival in 2017 by Duncan Ord, the Director-General of the then Department of Culture and the Arts.The facility has since been further improved thanks to support from three rounds of the Public Regional Galleries Improvement Fund - part of the Government of Western Australia's Regional Exhibition Touring Boost administered by ART ON THE MOVE.
