I'm a passionate individual born and raised in southwest Chicago, currently teaching Ethnic Studies at Golder College Prep in West Town. Two questions I am frequently asked are: Why did you become a teacher? How do you like teaching? There are numerous reasons that motivated my career choice, which I can narrow down to two. My choice was inspired by a long line of educators in my family, most of whom taught in Mexico, and most notably my mother. Additionally, I took many opportunities to work with youth and communities all across Chicago after graduating HS. This eventually lead me to ask the question, how can I affect change in a classroom setting? I am now in my 6th year teaching, exploring nuanced social studies content with students.Looking ahead, my goal is to transition to a curriculum development role so I may design culturally relevant materials and experiences for teachers like me and diverse student populations. My interest for developing curricula is growing as I am tasked to create materials over the course of my time teaching. My materials are inspired by past and present student perspectives and unique stories.
