About Adam Alsegård
I'm a social software engineer based in Sweden, currently working full-time with a hybrid setup for Sectra Imaging IT as a Technical Team Lead / Software Engineer. My team has a lot of senior competence and is focused on the long term plan regarding performance and visualization for the whole platform, but primarily focused on Radiology Imaging. This means that we are trying to find the best possible solutions for running medical imaging software (PACS) on high-latency networks and in the cloud. It includes looking into state-of-the-art solutions for e.g. server-side rendering, compression algorithms & graphics APIs.This role fits nicely within the theme of what I've always been interested in, which is to render large & complex datasets as fast and visually pleasing as possible while still being able to interact with it in a user friendly way. Right now it's medical images, stacks & volumes but I've previously worked with astrophysical visualization (1,7B stars) and within the film industry doing similar things. Only then it was with hair & fur or digital humans in game engines (UE).This role also lets me explore another big interest of mine, which is leadership. The relationships and workflows of software development teams and how to make them work as efficient and autonomous as possible. Sectra has put a lot of trust in me and I feel that I will thrive while exploring these subjects more in-depth!
Listed skills include C++, Java, Opengl, Computer Graphics, and 12 others.

Software Engineer / Team Lead
CurrentTeam Lead within Products & Services at Sectra Imaging IT working in one of the four Radiology Imaging teams. My team is more focused on the long term plan regarding performance and visualization. Meaning that we are working on new solutions for PACS running in the cloud and/or on high-latency networks. This includes finding & implementing the best possibilities regarding for example 3D servers, remote rendering, compression algorithms, progressive transfer, image loading and render APIs.I'm also actively developing my leadership skills.
Senior Engine Developer
Senior developer in the (Unreal) Engine team at Framestore. We were working on utilizing Unreal Engine for large-scale VFX projects and for photoreal digital humans. This included creating a pipeline for versioned film-level assets, developing tools to enable real-time workflows for the artists in previs, techvis and postvis and improving the look and performance of photoreal digital humans.I was mainly involved in the FUSE and PRESENT projects. The result of FUSE can be seen in the short film Flite and PRESENT was an EU Grant project with 8 partners with the final presentation in Oct 2022.
R&D Software Developer
Software developer in in the R&D Creature - Fur team. We were responsible for DNEG’s hair system with plugins in Maya, Houdini, Clarisse and Katana. Our system could be used to create, deform and render curve-based shaped as hair/fur, feathers, grass etc. Circumstances had it that I became the main developer after only six months. Among other improvements I developed a new graph UI in Qt & C++ for editing the fur networks to help the transition to a DCC agnostic tool. The main language used was C++, with some Python & Bash scripting.
Software Engineer
Software Engineer in the R&D department, working with developing radiology imaging solutions for Sectra’s PACS software, IDS7. My team was responsible for the image window and all its tools and clinical apps as well as how to render image stacks and volumes efficiently. Sectra’s overall goal is to contribute to a safer and healthier society and the software runs in hospitals all over the world. We coded mainly in C# (.NET) but used C++ when working with the rendering engine.
Research Scholar (Master Thesis Project)
As my master thesis project in computer science I worked on developing the open source project OpenSpace, which is a collaboration between NASA, American Museum of Natural History, Linköping University and a few others. OpenSpace is a free software aimed to visualize space research, especially in dome theaters (planetariums). My thesis project focused on integrating 1,7 billion stars from the second data release (DR2) from ESA's ongoing Gaia mission. By developing an out-of-core rendering technique where data is streamed from disk during runtime I was able to run the complete dataset on both desktop PCs (with single CPU and GPU) and on a cluster of computers in planetariums. Several optimizations to the rendering pipeline was made including how to fetch data from disk, how to stream stars to the GPU and how to render the stars. The user could also switch between different rendering methods during runtime as well as filter the stars both in runtime or offline (as a pre-processing step). The project was successful and at the end of my thesis I was invited to New York City to the Gaia Sprint 2018 where 100 astronomers gathered to find new science in the released data. As part of the sprint an event was held at the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History where they used OpenSpace with my implementation to show several subsets of Gaia DR2 to the astronomers. The biggest subset had 920 million stars. We also turned time on for the 7,2 million stars with measured velocity and could see how they moved through space. The implementation was done in C++17 and OpenGL 4.6. Attached is a short demo video and my thesis report for those that want to learn more.
Teaching Assistant
I was a teaching assistant for two different C++ programming courses.During HT1 for the first year students in the course TND012 - Foundations of Programmingand during HT2 for second year students in TNG033 - C++ Programming. The work entailed being responsible for a total of 16 lab sessions á 4 hours.
Software Developer
Summer job at Sectra Imaging IT where we (a group of 5) further developed a chat feature for Sectra's PACS software with C# and .NET framework. Our main tasks were to enable chat history, group chats, emoji support, browsing users efficiently and to improve the UI. My main focus was on the client and the front-end development. I gained experience with exploring a huge code base and delivering professional solutions for real customers.
Researcher
I researched machine learning as a summer job with one other student. More specifically we explored Deep Convolutional Neural Networks with the framework Caffe and examined if we could apply it on Spotscale’s problems. In the end we could easily classify images into 3 base categories, and later on also classify superpixels into 9 different, more specific, categories with high success rate.
New Student Advisor (Klassföreståndare)
As a form teacher I was employed by Linköping University to guide a new class of MT-students during their first few months at the university. In total I held 6 session á 2 hours where I taught everything from how to use the 'student portal' to different study techniques, as well as playing a few ice breaking and social games. During this time, and the following months, I acted as a mentor for the new students and tried to gain their trust. Which I feel that I did.
Mathematics Tutor
Mathematics tutor for the new students in the first three courses in mathematics (Foundation in Math, Linear Algebra and Calculus I). As a tutor I was responsible for a math class about once a week and answered the students questions and demonstrated solutions on the white board.
Healthcare Staff
I had four different jobs during this period.Care staff for Jönköping municipality, summer job, 06.2014-08.2014Personal assistant for Nordströms Assistans AB, full time, 09.2011-07.2012Personal assistant for Jönköping municipality, part time, 05.2011-07.2012Substitute teacher for Habo municipality, part time, 10.2011-05.2012
