Software Engineer Ii
In my role as a Software Engineer II, I have been tasked with the development of a comprehensive global uptime monitoring system. Additionally, I have assumed ownership of a graph processing and indexing system designed to manage database schema metadata. For the global uptime monitoring, I engineered and built a robust system aimed at aggregating system and subsystem availability metrics into Prometheus. This initiative was born out of the necessity to collect complex structured uptime metrics that off the shelf systems were incapable of doing, which primarily focus on collecting HTTP status codes. Our requirement demanded structured subsystem availability metrics, prompting the creation of a custom exporter within the Prometheus framework. The aggregated metrics serve as integral components within SLA reports and are leveraged in real-time dashboards powered by Grafana, fortifying the operational observability of our microservices infrastructure deployed on Kubernetes for the SRE team.Furthermore, in pursuit of my professional development, I have assumed code ownership for the graph processing and indexing system governing database schema metadata. In this capacity, my duties encompass bug resolution, dependency maintenance, collaborative architectural design with fellow engineers, and review of code changes. I have spearheaded initiatives to expand the scope of collected metadata and integrate data-quality results in tandem with metadata.
Cloud Software Engineer
In my capacity as a Cloud Software Developer, I spearheaded the development of two significant projects within my organization: a Visual SQL Query Builder and a Rich Text Migration.Firstly, I led the creation of a Visual SQL Query Builder, a pivotal addition that empowered non-technical users to craft straightforward SQL queries tailored to their database systems. This innovation facilitated enhanced productivity for Data Stewards and Consultants, enabling them to independently query databases without reliance on Technical Analysts. To achieve this, I extended our Datasets to work with SQL queries, built a SQL parser that allowed us to embed metadata within the queries, and built a UI to enable nontechnical users to build nested Where Clauses and Table Joins.Secondly, I orchestrated the implementation of a Rich Text Migration initiative, a global upgrade endeavor aimed at transitioning our existing markdown data to a Rich Text format. This upgrade provided customers with the capability to format complex text in alignment with their specific business requirements. To facilitate this transition, I developed a transformation pipeline to convert our existing data to the new format seamlessly. Additionally, I revamped our APIs to enable real-time data transformation, ensuring a smooth deployment and adoption process for the new feature. In addition to my major projects, I supported the team through comprehensive code reviews, system design evaluations, and mentorship initiatives aimed at building the skills of newer developers within the organization.
Software Developer And Co-Founder
Knowtworthy is a Meetings Productivity tool for business professionals to aid in organizing, formatting, and sharing meeting minutes. My responsibilities at Knowtworthy extend to every layer of stack: frontend, backend, and cloud infrastructure. Additionally, I work closely with the business side of the company on customer acquisition. On the technology side, I work on the Frontend & Backend and manage the cloud infrastructure on AWS. Using React and MaterialUI, I built the customer facing web app from our new UI/UX designs. On the backend, I built the Backend API on Node.js, MongoDB, and Elasticsearch and the audio streaming server on Go and S3. Furthermore, I’ve built many miscellaneous services within the company, everything from an Elasticsearch indexers to versioned database migration management systems. Lastly, I manage the Kubernetes cluster on EKS and AWS and all of its deployments. This includes the CI/CD system, production environment, mirrored staging environment, other internet facing services. On the business side, I work as a co-founder to Knowtworthy. I’ve helped build the company from its initial idea to launching a product to begin acquiring customers. I work directly with my co-founders to actualize our ideas into a product with features that customer want.
Software Developer Intern
At BMO, I worked on a new internal Business Intelligence (BI) tool for the bank’s reconciliation officers. My job was to assist the team in designing and building the MVP for the Frontend in HTML, CSS, Javascript, and jQuery. My MVP UI and Frontend was used to pitch the product to upper management. Additionally, I worked with the reconciliation team to design a Regression Testing tool. The team was having trouble verifying that each release didn’t break the system and was investing man hours into manually checking all of the logs. Using Python, I wrote a Regression Testing tool to bring breaking changes to the attention of the team before they rolled out a new version. Overall, the team reported a 50% reduction in the amount of labor need to certify each release.
Web Developer
At BDM Trucks, I was brought in a freelance web developer to re-design and optimize the SEO for their website. I migrated the old website from SharePoint to a website in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Furthermore, I cut hosting costs by hosting the website on Github Pages. Additionally, I re-wrote all of the copy on the pages to optimize the business's presence on Google.
Mobile Application Developer
At Shenandoah University, I worked with a team of researchers looking to collect anonymized patient outcomes from physician's offices in Winchester, VA. For them, I built an iOS and Android app to collect these reports from doctors who enrolled in the program. Additionally, I built a backend on Google AppEngine and MySQL to collect and store the results in cloud. Finally, I cleaned up the data and delivered the final set of results to the research team at the end of the study.
