Developing mathematical models and designing software to simulate blood flow and nutrient transport in the human placenta.Specifically, we use the Navier-Stokes equations with an additional Darcy-like drag term, representing the dynamics of blood flow in the placenta, which is then coupled to a reaction-advection-diffusion equation to model the transport of nutrients. We use discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods (DGFEMs) to discretise this system of equations, and use some in-house software in Fortran to efficiently assemble the resulting nonlinear system. You can read more here: https://r.blakey.family/phdI also have experience independently teaching Python to first-year undergraduates, attended and presented at several conferences and workshops (including an award for best talk), contributed to some consultancy work creating a bespoke finite element package for an external company, and won an award for my contributions to the research community.
