I was elected as President of the Southern Society of Chartered Accountants at the most recent AGM in May of 2015. The Southern Society of Chartered Accountants (SOSCA) supports almost 5,000 ICAEW members who live or work here in the South (Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Dorset and the Salisbury district of Wiltshire). SOSCA was set up to assist its members in both their personal and professional development by providing an active programme of events each year that includes a combination of practical skills and CPD courses, as well as social events and networking opportunities. SOSCA also aims to promote the profession of accountancy as well as the ICAEW brand. SOSCA has an active committee made up of members from practice, commerce and the public sector. It aims to provide a link between our members and the ICAEW to promote two-way communication of both technical and professional matters. The committee holds regular meetings across the region to which any SOSCA member is always welcome, either as an observer or as a potential committee member. As part of the southern support network, there are town groups (Bournemouth, Dorchester and Southampton) and local discussion groups (Portsmouth and Southampton), as well as an active student society SCASS (the Southern Chartered Accountants Student Society) for ICAEW students. YCAG (Young Chartered Accountants’ Group) is for members up to 10 years post-qualification. SOSCA also formed JPG (Joint Professions Group), an informal group incorporating some 20-odd professional institutes, including its CCAB (Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies) counterparts. JPG organises and promotes unique events for cross-professional networking.
