Formally managed team of 3 full-time engineers and 1 consultant from August 2011.IODA (acquired by Sony Music in July 2009) managed the digital distribution and royalty processing for hundreds of thousands of albums. My team's work increased the throughput, reliability, flexibility, and efficiency of the backend systems. These systems performed content ingestion, deliveries, and royalty processing. The royalty system processed an exponentially increasing volume of transactions over time.

Clients from August 2006 to February 2009: JotSpot, Peak Web Consulting, Claria, uWink. Employed technologies such as Python, Java, Perl, Oracle, MySQL, BerkeleyDB, and XMPP/Jabber for projects including: custom map/reduce framework, schema diff/upgrade/archiving framework, and collaborative filtering, large-scale bandwidth cost and SLA modeling.July-October 2004: Implemented a variety of text processing algorithms using Java for Claria. Applied linguistic data-mining techniques to explore viability of new products. See US Patents 7,444,358 and 7,836,009.

Updated software development lifecycle for team of over 20 developers. These initiatives included Subversion, Maven 2, Eclipse, monitoring systems, and the development of proprietary tools for change control and configuration management. Tuned complex Oracle database schema. Prototyped an application of generative programming techniques to Mitratech’s core product.

Early member of both backend and frontend engineering teams. Backend systems implemented in perl, including time-series and state-change databases using BerkeleyDB. Substantial contributions to Oracle schema. Frontend duties included rewrite of externally produced web application, implementation of time-series graphing library, and backend connectivity. NOCpulse was purchased by Red Hat in September 2002. The code was open-sourced by Red Hat in 2008 as the monitoring portion of "Spacewalk". See US Patent 8,145,742.

Founding member of team that designed operations group’s industry-leading monitoring, automation, and reporting toolset. The team was described as a "neanderthal SRE group" in the Conclusion of Google's SRE Book.Much of my focus in that role was developing a comprehensive time-series collection and navigation system ("Logmaster"). The majority of these systems were implemented using object-oriented perl.Excite grew over 10x in many metrics during my time there, and peaked as the third most popular site on the internet. The operations team managed a system of over 2000 cpus.

Implemented NSAPI plugin that bridged Netscape webserver and proprietary backend server. The code was written in C and compiled on Solaris, HPUX, Irix, and OS/2.
