About Adam Rice

After graduating from Aston University with a first class honours degree in BSc Computing Science, I began my career with IBM. My first role was working as a software tester on the mainframe (z/OS), testing IBM's transaction processor, CICS Transaction Server for z/OS. My main focus during this time was the testing for the Java environment in CICS that was being significantly enhanced for v4.1 and v4.2.I have since moved to Investec, a specialist bank and asset manager in the City. Starting out as a middleware developer in a growing integration team, I was eventually promoted to the head of integration, being responsible for the platform as well as the integration developers in the team.Outside of work I have a young son who manages to occupy most of my time, so my hobbies often include soft play, swimming and jumping in muddy puddles. However, when I get time to indulge in my own interests I prefer photography and, when the weather is good, barbecuing.

Head Of Integration And Platform Enablement For Treasury & Trading
    Investec Sep 2022 - Present
    London, England, United Kingdom
Following a significant update in our cloud strategy our existing integration platform was now no longer the strategic approach for integration. I was tasked with working with procurement and legal to produce the necessary documentation to enable the operational support of the platform to be outsourced to our strategic outsourcing partner, where I would retain oversight of the day-to-day running and future direction. This initiative enabled our former integration team to move on to deliver more strategically important projects for the bank.DORA has been adopted by the bank as a method for measuring the effectiveness of our engineering teams. I am the DORA Champion for Treasury & Trading, responsible for educating our engineering teams on what the metrics mean and how they can use them in retrospectives help make data-driven decisions about what improvements they could make in their delivery processes.Another facet of my role is as the OKR Ambassador for the Treasury & Trading business unit, responsible for getting OKR practices embedded in teams and upskilling them on both the process and Viva Goals for tracking progress. The bank has a huge focus on adoption of Azure DevOps to standardise on our tooling, The initial phase has seen me working across the Treasury & Trading teams to migrate 26 Jira projects and almost 44,000 work items to ADO Boards and helping teams become familiar with the new tool.
  • Investec
Head Of Integration For Corporate And Institutional Banking
    Investec Feb 2018 - Sep 2022
    London, United Kingdom
Responsible for managing a team of 8 integration developers, carrying out performance and compensation reviews, and organising regular team building activities.Platform owner for the integration solutions (IBM Integration Bus, IBM MQ and AWS API Gateway), which involves managing the budget; ensuring we have adequate monitoring and our of hours support in place; working with the licensing team to ensure we remain fully compliant; and ensuring we have a DR plan that is regularly tested and reviewed.I implemented a process for operational support to be handled through Service Now, replacing the previous process of email, instant messaging, or phone calls. This means we are better able to ensure nothing gets missed or forgotten and we can be more responsive to our users, aiming to resolve 80% of tickets on the same day. Being as responsive as we can to other teams helps minimise the impact the handoff to us has and enables them to get moving as quickly as possible. To manage our development work we have begun using Kanban. We make good use of WIP limits on the Kanban board and adopted a "stop starting, start finishing" mentality. This enables the team to remain more focused on fewer items resulting in much improved lead times for our customers. The adoption of Kanban in the team is much more than just a board with columns. We are constantly questioning our process and way of working, making necessary changes where needed. The team managed to achieve a cycle time of 5 days or less for 50% of the items we delivered and 11 days or less for 70% of the items delivered.I run quarterly strategy planning meetings with the team where we review the previous quarter's performance and look forward at what we want to achieve in the coming quarter as well as whether our goals are still applicable, in the context of the wider organisation. This allows the team an opportunity to help shape and drive the direction of the integration platform.
  • Investec
    Middleware Developer
    Investec Jan 2013 - Jan 2018
    London, United Kingdom
I was a middleware developer specialising in WebSphere Message Broker (IBM Integration Bus) and IBM MQ to build robust, scalable integration solutions across several business areas. The integration team had full cradle-to-grave responsibility for all integrations. We were involved in the design with other tech teams, the implementation, deployment and operational support once live. Some examples of interfaces that I have built include:- An integration between external trading platforms and our back office systems to facilitate STP of FX trade confirmations.- A re-usable "publisher" of updates to client data from our onboarding system that could publish changes to the data to downstream systems that needed real-time updates of the data.- An integration with the Cisco web dialer API, that simplified a fairly complex SOAP API into a very simple RESTful API that application owners could use to implement Click-to-call functionality. This allowed them to turn phone numbers on a web page into clickable hyperlinks, providing a material cost saving for areas of the business that were heavy phone users.- An integration between our Asset Finance data warehouse and a model calculation engine that on a monthly basis would extract approx 100k contracts, send them to the model engine to re-calculate things such as Probability of Default (PD) and Loss Given Default (LGD), and store the results back in the data warehouse. The main transformation interfaces I used were ESQL and XSLT. Occasional use of Java Compute node, mainly where a 3rd party library was required.Other tasks included:- MQ administration, such as, queue creation/deletion, connecting Queue Managers via channels, administering channel authentication records to control access, and in some cases configuring high-availability using MQ multi-instance.
