My master's research focused on using transdisciplinary approaches to study sustainable livelihoods in regions with a high concentration of Indigenous and forest-dependent communities in British Columbia and Indonesia• Developing research plans with local partners, including timelines, protocols, interview guides, and lists of potential research participants; successfully registering the research project with UBC's Behavioural Research Ethics Board• Conducting social network analysis (SNA) using network analysis software (Gephi) to evaluate the social landscape of the local forest sector; data were collected through in-depth interviews with stakeholders and coded using qualitative data management software (NVivo)• Identifying a lack of collaborations among local stakeholders as a significant challenge to sustainability; presenting results at local meetings and international conferences involving a broad range of audiences to promote the importance of strengthening social networks to creating enabling environments for sustainable livelihoods in forest landscapesPublication:Riggs, R. The internship program allowed me to undertake a six-month research project that sought to identify conditions that foster learning and innovation in the forest industry, particularly among smaller forest businesses in Quesnel. The research project was sponsored by City of Quesnel's Forestry Initiatives Program and Mitacs Accelerate program. The work involved with this project included:• Reviewing literature on innovation ecosystem and documents related to the forest industry in Interior BC• Interviewing research participants representing municipal, provincial, and First Nations governments, universities, primary industries, secondary industries, supporting services, and non-governmental organizations in the Cariboo region• Writing a policy brief for City of Quesnel's Forestry Initiatives Program to provide a reference for future activities• Presenting the result of the study to research participants

Indonesia

Tanah Air Beta is a non-governmental organization based in Indonesia funded by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund that seeks to advocate bottom-up approaches to resource management in Indonesia. A a researcher, my activities included:• Conducting field research, including interviews and focus group discussions involving local communities to understand local practices, history of local resource management, forest dynamics, and economic activities• Facilitating participatory rural inventory activities involving Indigenous and forest-dependent community members, such as dotmocracy, historical timeline, and landscape scenario visualization. The provincial government used the output to inform the planning of a conservation initiative with local communities.• Preparing a report on the local economic activities in four villages. The report provided information relevant to landscape activities involving Indigenous and forest-dependent communities to increase their capacity as forest farmers.

Innovation for Indonesia's School Children (INOVASI) is a partnership between the Australian and Indonesian governments with a budget of AU$49 million to improve students' literacy and numeracy skills in Indonesia's underdeveloped regions. Under the Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning Department, my work as a research assistant included:• Performing socio-economic and learning outcome data updating, cleaning, and editing using Stata• Preparing 20 reports on the baseline studies conducted in partner schools and regions; the output provided contextual background to design intervention programs with partner organizations and expand the existing partnership network
