Years ago, when everyone had Nokia phones and went to the pub at lunchtime, I was a low-end suit, living and working in London. Something to do with processes. I can't remember exactly but the nights out were fantastic.One Friday night, I was run over by a taxi. I bashed my leg up and closed Oxford Street for an hour. My hospital admission sheet, written by an unimpressed A&E doctor, said 'this man has had EIGHT pints', something the physio kept laughing at. They put a titanium pin in my leg and I was going to be on crutches for four months, far away from the office. My boss sent me a laptop and a copy of MS Access: 'Build us a project support system - bug tracking, change requests, that sort of thing'. I had never written a single line of code and had no idea how to do it. Life was getting hard: leg banged up, stuck on my mum's sofa and all of a sudden typing strange words and funny brackets into a computer - something I had zero interest in or knowledge of. Within two days, I was hooked. I remember screaming and shouting when I made the contents of one drop-down list-box change after clicking another drop-down. My mum rushed in, thinking I'd fallen - I wasn't sure how I'd done it but I'd outsmarted a computer and it felt great. Four months later, after endless head scratching 18 hour days, sat at my parents' dining table in front of that old laptop, I delivered the system to my boss and knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up. Programming is the best video game ever invented and I've been playing ever since. C#, Angular, SQL server - doesn't matter - they're just tools to get the work done but it's true: find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life.
