As the director of design and engineering, I managed a team of 4-5 in-house designers and engineers consisting of an architectural designer, an interior designer, a mechanical engineer and 1-2 CAD drafters. In addition, I managed outside consultants in structural engineering, MEP engineering, sustainability, life cycle analysis, and outside computer rendering. I reported directly to the CEO and coordinated design efforts across other departments including production, product development, procurement and marketing.

As the owner of a design-build architectural practice for 17 years, I was responsible for all aspects of both the design and construction of many projects both residential and commercial ranging from small remodels to ground-up homes. In this role, I gained extensive experience in design, permitting, bidding and construction. I gained experience in both structural and MEP design, sometimes performing these tasks myself and sometimes working with consulting engineers. In addition to designing projects, I also built many of them. In the role of general contractor, I gained extensive experience in construction bidding, contract negotiation, scheduling, material procurement and logistics. I also gained experience in site management and management of sub-contractors and contract labor. In addition to the architectural portions of my projects, I also performed both the interior design and landscape design. For interiors, I have personally designed and built custom furniture, specified and created art installations and performed FF&E specification and installation. For landscape, I have designed both hardscape and softscape including irrigation design, planting schedules and full landscape plans.

As the project manager and site superintendent for Scandia Construction, I typically oversaw 3-4 residential remodel projects simultaneously. My role was to ensure all of the subcontractors, carpenters and laborers were on-site, knew their assigned tasks and had the material and tools they needed to perform their job. I reported directly to the owner and was the client point of contact during the construction phase of the project. I gained experience both managing construction sites and teams of subcontractors and laborers.

I started at Marmol Radziner as a project architect primarily working as a drafter preparing construction documents for both residential historic preservation and new construction single family homes. I was soon promoted to project manager overseeing a number of projects during the construction administration phase including a conference center (one of the first LEED platinum projects in Los Angeles), an LAUSD school retrofit and a number of residential homes both new construction and remodel.

While still a student at the University of Oregon Portland Studio, I was hired at Architröpolis for my skill at building physical models. While there, I helped develop their 3D computer modeling capabilities and was part of a team that won an architectural competition for the W Hotel in South Beach Florida. After graduating from the University of Oregon, I continued on as a project architect helping produce construction documents for a number of high-end celebrity homes. In addition, I worked on a number of product development projects and a Sci-Fi Channel trade show booth.

While a student at the University of Oregon, I worked as a lab assistant in the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory under G.Z. Brown. During my time there, I worked on a study for the U.S. Department of Energy creating a “stressed skin insulating core low-income demonstration house” and experimenting with alternative foundation systems for SIP panel structures. We also worked on a vegetated roof demonstration project illustrating the ability of vegetated roofs to slow stormwater runoff aiding in stormwater management.
