I am a Full Professor of Geography at Bucknell University, where I teach courses in political, social, and historical geography, which also serve departments such as Women’s & Gender Studies, International Relations, History, and Psychology. At my university -in addition to serving as Chair of my Department for many years -I have also served as a Faculty Fellow within the office of the Associate Provost for Equity & Inclusive Excellence. My commitment to equity and inclusion is integral to my transformative teaching, and in recognition this, I am a recent recipient of both a President’s Diversity & Inclusion Award, and a Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence at my institution.Underpinning my diverse scholarly interests, is the fact that I am an expertly-trained, critical human geographer, who seeks to illuminate the role played by spaces, places, and landscapes (at a range of different scales) in forging identity during times of struggle. This is evident for example, in my exploring historical dimensions of Irish nationalism from the scale of the globe to that of the home, the transatlantic abolitionist activism of Frederick Douglass, Japanese American resistance to WWII incarceration, and contemporary urban struggles for LBGTQ rights. I am currently engaged in community-focused, public scholarship, namely as a member of the executive board of the Globe Lane Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting cultural exchange, inspired by the American abolitionist and freedom fighter, Frederick Douglass. In this regard for example, I am one of the principal organizers of #DouglassWeek; a collaborative event in which we partner with artists, musicians, poets, athletes, community groups, activists, school-children, and scholars -to organize events which cultivate partnerships & advance intertwined struggles for freedom, equality, liberation and justice. Furthermore, as part of a Globe Lane Initiative team, I have also developed the Cork Abolitionists Trail, which draws on my research illuminating the key role played by Irish men and woman in the anti-slavery struggle during the 19th Century, and in particular the key locations where the abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, spoke during his time living in the city of Cork. The trail serves as important historical and geographical precedent, in the built urban fabric, of a local tradition of anti-racism which has been overlooked but which is important to recover today.
