Adrian Smith works in the Department of Management at the University of Sussex Business School. Adrian specialises in the relationships between work, technology, sustainable development and agrifood value chains; employment, global production and trade integration; and global value chains and urban and regional development. In 2022 and 2023 he held a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship for a project focused on the employment consequences of technological and scientific developments in glasshouse agrifood value chains (see: https://www.sussex.ac.uk/business-school/research/centres-projects/fields-of-glass). He is an Associate Fellow of the ESRC Digital Futures at Work Research Centre.He joined the University of Sussex Business School in 2022 after almost 20 years at Queen Mary University of London where he held a number of leadership positions as Deputy Vice-Principal (Research Excellence), Deputy Vice-Principal in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Dean for Research, and Head of School. He also co-founded the inter-disciplinary Centre on Labour and Global Production. Prior to this he worked at the Universities of Southampton, Kentucky and began his academic career in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Sussex.He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Editor-in-Chief of European Urban and Regional Studies, and was elected to the Academy of Social Sciences in 2007. He is a Visiting Professor at Queen Mary University of London and a member of the Centre on Labour, Sustainability and Global Production.
