I am the Founder of Replay, a private equity and VC-funded gene and cell therapy company headquartered in San Diego, California. Replay is progressing an HSV-based gene therapy into the clinic. I was formerly Executive Chairman, and President of Replay. Prior to that I was EVP and Head of R&D at SGMO, leading programs in gene editing, in vivo genome engineering, transcriptional repression, gene therapy, autologous CAR-Treg, and allogeneic CAR-T cell therapy. Prior to that I was CMO of the 5AM-, LSP-, Abingworth-, and Versant-backed cancer neoantigen vaccine and oncolytic virus company Nouscom, based in Basel, Switzerland, and Rome, Italy. I was Global Clinical Leader of Early and Late Stage Immuno-Oncology/Hematology at Pfizer based in New York, and held positions of increasing responsibility at Bristol-Myers Squibb in London UK and Princeton, New Jersey. My graduate and post-graduate medical training was in London, Oxford, and Cambridge, UK. I was awarded the Jelf Medal, the highest honor that King’s College can bestow on its students. My PhD and post-doctoral work on molecular immunology was supervised by Nobel Prize winner, inventor of monoclonal antibodies, and discoverer of CD antigens, César Milstein. I was the Charles and Katharine Darwin Research Fellow at Darwin College Cambridge, UK, a Welcome Trust Clinical Research Fellow, and a National Foundation for Cancer Research Fellow at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, where I worked on alternative splicing and protein folding. I have authored over 150 publications, including two critically acclaimed books, book chapters, reviews, and peer-reviewed scientific papers. I have authored several patents addressing I-O therapy, synthetic DNA assembly, immune silencing, synthetic protein refolding machinery, and barcoding of human diseases using machine learning and soluble immune proteins. I am a regular contributor to The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and Science magazine, and contribute to various other publications including: Nature, The Spectator, The New Statesman, Financial Times, Prospect, The Times Literary Supplement, and The Literary Review. I am a Co-founder, Editorial Board member, and Books Review Editor of the GEN Biotechnology journal. I am on the Board of Directors of the Singapore- and San Diego-based TCR-T cell therapy company ImmunoScape. My new book, ‘The Future of Species’ will be published by Bloomsbury on 26 February 2026.
