The Department for Local Government is within the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government. It ensures that Local Councils have the legislative authority to respond to local needs and offers management and administrative support along with statutory funding to all Local Councils. It also acts as a stimulant to the devolution, decentralisation processes, people development, monitoring of local government in Malta.

The Department for Local Government within the Ministry for Home Affairs is responsible for Local Councils. Serve as Executive Secretary (CEO) to the San Gwann, Zurrieq and Isla Local Councils.
