Through said surgery, a patient who had severe cataracts opted in to have his cataracts cleared, and lens replaced. For this patient, phacoemulsification was the method of choice where the natural crystalline lens would be broken down to smaller pieces. Through a combined force of repeated suction (tool), physical abrasion “chopper” tool, the hardened lens has successfully been broken down- Was able to participate in Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for a patient with refractive error. - pre-op helped explain to the patient what the surgery entails, and that it should take only a few minutes to complete - during surgery, I scrubbed in, and took slight control of the Lasik coordination tool that aligns the different points of the cornea to assure a symmetrical braise. this was of course under the supervision of the consultant, and with the informed consent of the patient - Post-Op, helped reassure the patient after a successful surgery, but also advise patients to avoid certain things such as hair dryers…- was able to shadow during consultations, and shared a part in viewing the sclera, lens, and retina, through the various tools equipped.- Apart from that, had an insightful few sessions at clinic, where we conferred with patients who previously had surgery, or had newly brought up symptoms.P.S this is a very shortened summary of all the things that took place Show less

The whole experience was truly one of a kind. full and deep removal of all the fat and irrelevant structures took place. consequently a deep burrow emerged. through there, you can quite clearly view all the pectoralis muscles, in addition to major arteries and veins like the subclavian. once the lymph node was extracted, three sets of sutures were needed to ensure safe closure. the first was through the deep layer, the second was endoreticular, and the last being the superficial. I was lucky enough to have had the opportunity to take over the endoreticular end of the suturing- Saw multiple flaps- observed the removal a squamous cell carcinoma in the buccal mucosa. obviously the area was all removed, with an additional 3cm all around to ascertain no remaining cancer is left. interestingly, no grafts were needed, but rather due to the loose skin of the patient, the neck skin was just extended far enough and stretched to close that area. it was sutured and later glued. thankfully the patient was happy (mentioned he had a free face lift) Show less

The program entailed a series of productive aspects that all coherently melded to complete each other. All coming together to yield a final poster, and a literature review divulging into the research that has been made. the first few weeks consisted of several lectures outlining the basics of research and some STEM related topics, Along side that, I was introduced to the team and have had a thorough induction on the clinical tools and lab equipment utilized in conducting the research. The Project I worked on was a multi dimensional research assay evaluating the effect of various Histone complexes on the development of cancer, specifically leukemia. With that said, a niche group of proteins have been meticulously identified, How? through various imaging, experiments, and plenty of research paper scouring. Naturally, testing of their molecular size, density, and other parts were taken into consideration to further understand the nature of those proteins, their dynamic, and involvement in cancer. Once that has been established the next faction of the project begins, which is to find a way to cure it. While, it might seem overwhelming at first…… it actually is. the project has taken my professor quite a while and till this day he is working on it. Thankfully, I was able to contribute by participating in the lab to help with centrifuging samples, storing (Freezing in designated room), pipetting, growing cultures…. but also with imaging through assisting in operating the NMR machine.
