Since November I have been part of Illini Athletics Marketing Team as a beginner internship. While studying Recreation, Sport, and Tourism here at the University of Illinois, I wanted to start actively working in the field I am trying to pursue as a career. As a "Street Team" member, I help with the promotion of many athletic events such as football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's tennis, gymnastics, and more. Before games, I speak with fans and hand out promotional materials such as posters and schedules for the current or upcoming sports season. During the games I will be asked to help with a variety of in-game promotion during time-outs, halftimes, or other breaks. During those breaks I set up and take down our scheduled activity, help contestants, and overall make sure these promotions run smoothly. I have learned a lot about the sports industry through this position, but beyond that I have learned a lot about how the marketing and promotion of a product works. I have learned what goes into an entertainment event like a basketball game, specifically the behind the scenes to make sure that everything outside of the actual game itself is running smoothly.
