Phd Candidate
Completed my PhD work in the laboratory of Dr. Rebecca Riggins. My doctoral project focused on characterizing the expression and function of estrogen-related receptor beta (ERRb) in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). My work involved characterizing ERRb using publicaly-available datasets, cell lines, and a tissue microarray series. This research is important for continuing to understand why TNBC, a cancer that disproportionately affects African-American women, is biologically different from other kinds of breast cancer.- Co-founder, Women in Science and Education graduate student group - Collaborator on initiative to map and build social networks for Latinx patients with breast cancer.
Graduate Student Researcher
For my master’s thesis work, and for the year following the completion of my degree, I conducted primary research studying fatty acid-derived DNA adducts as potential biomarkersin colorectal carcinogenesis. I was also involved in the analysis of these DNA adducts as potential disease severity biomarkers in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This work has since been published. This research is important for identifying patients with higher risk for developing cancer, particularly with the drastic increase in the rate of obesity in this country, which has been linked, directly, with fatty liver disease, a precursor for HCC.
Biopsy Tracking Assistant
Undergraduate Student Researcher
I worked in the laboratories of Dr. Joanne Tillotson and Dr. Joseph Skrivanek at the State University of New York, Purchase for approximately three years beginning in the summer of 2007. During my time there, I conducted primary research studying the effects of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids on NMU rat mammary tumor cell proliferation. I performed experiments to separate the plasma membrane and analyze lipid rafts and their fatty acids and proteins. The work was important in assembling a larger research project, which will asses the possibility of altering our diet to decrease the prevalence ofcancer.
