Whilst completing my final university year, I was particularly interested in providing art workshops and gaining skills through educational engagement. I worked collectively with PHD candidate Sarah Richardson on the National Saturday Club held within the University of Leeds as a Student Ambassador. Due to my past experience, I took on the role predominantly of supporting a few of the 14–16 year olds with Learning Disabilities and Autism. For a year I worked alongside Sarah in supporting her to plan and prepare for these workshops, and adapting sessions were necessary to individuals needs. I was also invited to run five workshops myself with a budget of £50 a session. I lead workshops in stop-motion animation, printmaking, mark-making, and creating a small installation displayed within the Degree Show and Somerset House London as a part of the national celebration event. I most enjoyed using exhibitions and sculptures as a point of departure to provide a catalyst to programme and create concepts for sessions.

Pyramid of Arts, a charity working to provide art workshops for individuals with learning disabilities (LDs) this really charity resonates with my values of ensuring art can be diverse and equal for all. This involved a 6-month full-time placement, spent between the office and supporting with the planning and facilitation of workshops. My role included supporting individuals with LDs of all ages and abilities some of whom live within a secure mental health ward. Many had communication difficulties or were completely non-verbal, this experience has allowed me to develop communication skills through sign language and understanding non-verbal communication methods. Through this experience I also learnt to be more understanding of individuals needs and learnt how to adapt sessions to ensure everyone could participate. The time that I spent in the office included analysing data, producing reports, along with creating new monitoring strategies were crucial to my role including taking part in committee meetings and general admin. Much of this work was using excel and I am well equipped in quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods. My role also included representing Pyramid of Arts at NHS conferences and working with other charities on various projects across Leeds, advertising their work and discussing potential funding opportunities and ways to improve the services that they provide. This experience has been so rewarding that despite the placement ending, I continued my voluntary work with Pyramid of Arts.
