Band 6 Mental Health Nurse within a community rehabilitation team

My role here is a support worker within a mental health hospital. There are elements of Forensic care. My responsibilities include: supporting patients in daily tasks, encouraging them to engage in activities, aid them in living the best quality of life whilst in the hospital and to prepare them for when they move on.

During this position I have experienced admin work, how the group sessions work, I have created my own programme based on Rebuilding Confidence and Self-Esteem which I successfully delivered to a group over 3 weeks.In addition to this, I wrote a section within a group session on Managing Anxiety and delivered the section I created to the group. I have shadowed and helped facilitate groups based on better sleep, debt management, understanding universal credit and managing anxiety. Skills I have gained from this position include: communication skills, understanding the difference in needs of each individual, enhanced compassion, session planning and time management.

I completed a work placement module during my Undergraduate Psychology Degree at Turning Point. During my time here I shadowed group sessions, I helped co-facilitate a group, shadowed referrals, helped with the clinic group, needle exchange and helped support the client group. During my 6 week placement I gained many skills: communication, ability to handle high pressure situation, compassion, an awareness to the different needs of each individual, more understanding of mental health and substance abuse and the process from referral to recovery.
