AJ is passionate about environmental humanities, political ecology, civil rights, and science education. He is dedicated to fighting for environmental justice for minorities, colonized, and indigenous peoples. His current research focuses on the potential to create constitutional rights for nature, and what these rights can mean for the most vulnerable in society. Before attending graduate school at Yale, AJ spent several years teaching and eventually helped found a public high school in one of the most disenfranchised neighborhoods in Brooklyn. He received his B.A. from Columbia University, an M.A. in Teaching Science from Relay Graduate School of Education, and an M.S. by conducting tropical ecology and environmental impact research in the rainforests of Ecuador and urban environments of Puerto Rico for the Yale School of the Environment.
