A summer placement after my third year of university.I returned to CTT before my final year of study in order to experience a new department, broaden my skillset and maintain the industrial connections I had formed during my placement year.The department I worked in was:- Heavy Duty Variable Geometry Turbocharger Current ProductDue to my previous time at the company I was fully aware of the systems and processes in place, which allowed me to assist on projects immediately. As well as building on previous experience, I was involved with a customer-facing project which required me to work to tight deadlines and eventually present to the customer.

An industrial placement between the second and third years of university, that formed part of my sandwich degree. During my time at CTT I was fortunate enough to rotate around four different departments, spending roughly three months in each. This gave me a much wider view of the company and gave me a greater breadth of experience. The departments I worked in were: - Light Duty Turbocharger Current Product- Advanced Technology- Technical Quality- Heavy Duty Turbocharger Current ProductThe year was hugely beneficial and has massively expanded my technical skills, particularly in designing, concept generation and problem solving. I had numerous independent design projects which I particularly enjoyed. One of the departments I worked in was a non-technical role, which gave me a different perspective of the company and gave me an insight into how the company operates as a business. Furthermore, the team-working and time management skills I developed over the year were hugely beneficial for when I returned to university.The company is accredited by the IMechE, thus allowing me to fully utilise my time here and make it count towards my IMechE MPDS personal development, to support my aim of becoming a chartered engineer.

A summer placement after my first year of university.During the placement I used SolidWorks computer design software extensively to produce British Standard models and drawings. I also spent time in the workshop gaining valuable hands-on experience through the use of different machinery and materials.The relatively long length of the summer placement allowed me to earn more responsibility within my position and the company. I was given numerous independent projects to research and design, before sourcing the materials, commissioning my own drawings and helping with the manufacture of my designs. It was hugely rewarding being able to physically touch something I had overseen from the design brief right through to the manufacturing stage.I also spent some time working on-site helping to install a wind turbine in Lincoln, which helped me to appreciate how flexible engineers have to be from one day to the next. Furthermore, the internship enhanced my communication skills greatly, through answering and transferring customers’ phone calls as well as attending and contributing to in-house production meetings.
