I am working on the development of boron doped diamond (BDD) electrochemical sensor technology for the detection of free chlorine at both high and low concentrations. I am gaining comprehensive capabilities as an academic researcher, for example, from acquiring experience in electroanalytical techniques and Python script writing to handle large data sets, to supervisory skills through mentoring PhD and MSc students. Also, I am working with industrial collaborators to optimize the chlorine sensing technology.

Electrical Double Layer in Ionic Liquids: Ionic liquids are room temperature liquid salts that will play key roles in a myriad of applications from batteries to biocatalysis, but knowledge of the interfacial properties is necessary before technological advances can be made. In the Shaw lab we use electrochemistry and spectroscopy to explore interfacial properties of the electrical double layer.Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction: Carbon dioxide can be electrochemically reduced to valuable products and fuels, but the reduction mechanism is poorly defined. Using advanced electrochemical techniques, GC, NMR, and FT-IR I have explored pyridinium and carbon dioxide reduction on gold electrodes. This work aims to develop a viable method of electrochemically reducing carbon dioxide.Studied electrochemical reduction of CO2 in aqueous solvents using pH dependent pyridinium-based catalysts, in addition to independently undertaking full electrolysis and product characterization components. Studied the fundamental electrochemistry and surface chemistry (double layer phenomena) in ionic liquids, in addition to their application in electrochemical measurements. Utilized electrochemical (DC cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and AC voltammetry) and advanced spectroscopic (infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy) methods to probe the ionic liquid/electrode interface, in addition to gaining experience in electrochemical cell design, inert environment conditions, glovebox expertise, small volume measurements i.e. < 500 µL, and vacuum Schlenk line. Led a significant portion of independent work by designing, performing, and interpreting scientific data with minimal assistance, including establishing a major international collaboration with Prof. Alan Bond (Monash University in Australia). Published key scientific findings in 8 scientific papers in leading, peer-reviewed journals, and presented work at major national scientific conferences.
National Science Foundation - Eapsi Fellow
Anthony Lucio, a member of Prof. Scott Shaw’s research group at the University of Iowa, was recently awarded an NSF-EAPSI fellowship and a T. Anne Cleary International Dissertation Research fellowship. These two awards supported Anthony’s proposed research for thirteen-weeks as a guest researcher in the laboratory of Prof. Alan Bond at Monash University, in Australia. This provided an exciting opportunity for exposure to international scientific infrastructure, culture, and higher learning. The title of Anthony’s proposal is, “Large Amplitude Fourier Transformed Alternating Current Voltammetry to Study the Electrical Double Layer Transition from Aqueous to Ionic Liquid Phases”. The work was carried out in the summer of 2015. The EASPI awards are open to all research fields supported by the NSF. Recipients are distinguished by their prior achievements in research and academics, as well as a carefully composed, independent proposal that describes the research to be carried out during the visit. The success of Anthony’s proposal reflects his potential to make significant contributions to his research field and to spearhead new directions in research via international collaboration.The T. Anne Cleary International Dissertation Research Fellowships are named in honor of Professor T. Anne Cleary, former University of Iowa Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor in the College of Education. Undergraduate Student Researcher
My work at SVSU under the supervision of Dr. David Karpovich aimed to develop an emulsion blend of crude glycerin and fuel oil for use as a heating fuel. I discovered that typical hydrophile-lipophile balance trends were inconsistent for preparing glycerin and oil emulsions. This employed the need for detailed formulations via surfactant studies, carefully crafted experimental designs, full characterization of crude glycerin samples, and stack emission studies with a small-scale industrial fuel burner. The research gave me an opportunity to learn Karl-Fisher titrations, high-performance liquid chromatography, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and viscometry. Overall, my work was prosperous and I successfully emulsified the undesirable crude glycerin and diesel fuel and burned the emulsion blend. This research was quite rewarding and demonstrated that the crude glycerin does not need to be sent to incinerators or landfills but rather could be reused in an emulsified fuel blend. Our emulsion work culminated in a publication in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry. I also presented my research at scientific meetings both locally and nationally.While at SVSU, I was involved with the Chemistry Club, where I was elected to a 2.5-year term as president. This position not only allowed me to mentor younger high school and college students, it provided a platform for making broader impacts by interacting with the greater Saginaw community. In this role I pursued numerous outreach activities such as: managing and participating in science demonstrations for K-12 students, establishing successful collaborations with other University chemistry clubs to host outreach events, and started an annual faculty research update for prospective students to become familiar with available projects in the department. These types of activities cultivated leadership qualities that I can use in my future profession.
Nist Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
My summer work made efforts to better understand the reflow characteristics of thin polymer films for circuitry applications. I analyzed polymer gratings with spectroscopic ellipsometry to characterize their shape evolution upon heating. In addition to the experimental work, I applied a rigorous coupled wave analysis computational program to fit and analyze the data. Working at a national laboratory provided valuable insight into high quality research.
International Reu
Liquid crystals have wide-ranging utility across a myriad of applications. During my research experience I fully synthesized two target liquid crystals of varying ligand functionality. Then, using polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and UV-vis spectroscopy, I fully characterized the liquid crystalline and light emission properties of the compounds. All lab work, records, and research were done using the Spanish language.
Co Op Research Student
After working as an administrator CO-OP for two years, I sought an undergraduate research position in the New Products High-Throughput division (Bldg. 1702). I worked on formulating several types of pre-polymers and examined their rheological behavior using a Brookfield viscometer and an Anton Paar rheometer. I collaborated with other Dow researchers and attended weekly safety meetings.
Polymer Science Reu
The University of Akron REU program was my first exposure to undergraduate research. During my summer visit I synthesized an amphiphilic rotaxane (macrocrown ether) and was fully trained on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to characterize my final product. The REU program also incorporated a polymer science short-course, seminars about graduate school prep-work, and culminated in a regional poster presentation.
