I conducted an independent research project focused on deep sea ecology. The project investigated whether a comparison between adult and larval species composition could be used as a indicator of self-recruitment potential at hydrothermal vents. I developed my microscopy skills. I also attended R and data management workshops. I became comfortable with conducting a range of analyses including NMDS analysis and PERMANOVA. Following my time at WHOI, I was invited to be part of the biology team on a research cruise on the R/V Atlantis to the East Pacific Rise. I was involved in sample processing and constructing colonisation surfaces. I also had the opportunity to go down to a depth of 2500m in DSV Alvin.

I cleaned the campsite toilets and helped clean and prepare the centre for the next group. I also helped out with gardening around the campsite and centre.
