Working with the police to provide advice on how to improve relations between the Norfolk Constabulary and young people. As part of this role, I helped plan and promote events that raised awareness of topics such as anti-bullying and the detrimental impacts of hard drug abuse. I also assisted with a charity football match with young people vs. police which raised money for Nelson’s Journey, the purpose of which was to help young people view officers differently. One issue I raised was that the police need young people to understand the equipment their officers carry, as this can make officers look intimidating and promote a negative response in adolescents. As a result, a webpage was created identifying what police carry and exactly why they carry it. I also assisted in writing a new positive engagement plan that helped the police develop good working relationships with both Children’s Services Staff and young people in their care.Please note: this was voluntary work - I was not paid or employed by the police.

A large part of this role was to advocate and make sure that those in the system have a say in things that will affect their lives. Ensuring their voice is heard and taken into account in the County Council’s decision-making process is essential. We were working to improve the lives of young people in foster care and when transitioning afterwards. I reviewed complaints procedures, foster placements planning and review processes. We ensured that appropriate education and training was made available to those in care. I was involved in writing a new Foster Carer Charter that outlined the responsibilities of the local authority and foster carers regarding those in care. I spoke at conferences about these issues as well as planning and delivering workshops. I provided an annual ten-point guide as to what issues we commit and prioritise to address each year. Assessing and commissioning new hostels and care homes for young people (particularly places such as YMCA’s).Please note: this was voluntary work - I was not paid or employed by Norfolk County Council

Researching the following areas: • Healthy Child (Whether children are less healthy in different families e.g., Single parent, rich or poor)• Healthcare Provision (Assessing guidelines which help doctors recognise and respond to children who have been mistreated at home)• Mental health and Adolescence (How to decrease the number of young people engaging in risky behaviour)Please note: The meetings were one day every three months for two years as part of the NCB research project.
