Abhishek Choudhary studied economics in Delhi and Chennai, followed by brief stints with non-profits and in journalism. He was awarded the NIF Fellowship in 2017 to research the former Indian prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s life. During the winter of 2021–22, he was a scholar-in-residence at the International Centre Goa. The first volume of his biography, 'Vajpayee: The Ascent of the Hindu Right, 1924–1977', was released in India in May 2023 to great critical acclaim. It won the Tata Literature Live! First Book Award 2023 and was a notable book of the year in the Hindu, the Telegraph, Frontline, and the Quint. His research on Vajpayee and, more generally, the Hindu Right has been quoted by the BBC World, the New York Times, and other forums. He has also written for a dozen-odd popular publications, including the Caravan, Deccan Herald, DNA, the Economic and Political Weekly, Himal Southasian, HuffPost India, the Indian Express, Newslaundry, Scroll.in, and the Wire. He lives in a village at the edge of south Delhi.
