Hi, I'm an associate professor of International Relations at Ozyegin University - Istanbul, specializing in conflict research, computational methods and digital crisis communication. I teach qualitative, quantitative and computational research methods, IR theory, technology and comparative conflict research. I work with Carnegie Endowment's Digital Democracy Network on how new technologies affect diplomacy and statecraft. I advise TikTok (and previously advised Meta, Alphabet and Twitter) and a number of international organizations on extremist content policy and online safety, and lead the Twitter Istanbul Developer Community, where we explore and discover new research methods to study digital online behavior. Since 2018, I've been organizing the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS Istanbul), which brings some of the most innovative doctoral students from around the world to work on topics related to digital data and social behavior. In the past, I worked as a research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute, Oxford Artificial Intelligence Society and the Alan Turing Institute in London, as well as a lecturer at Princeton, Michigan and Yale.Since 2024, I lead the DE-CONSPIRATOR project; a HorizonEurope funded large-consortium research undertaking, aiming to detect and counter Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) across Europe. I also serve on the advisory board of the European Cyber Conflict Research Incubator - Google's flagship cybersecurity training program for EU universities, and the editorial board of the Global Studies Quarterly, published by Oxford University Press and the International Studies Association (ISA).
