Team Leader Research PhysicistUs Army Reseach Lab Sep 2000 - Oct 2015Adelphi, MdMy responsibilities as team leader was to develop the use of magnetic sensors and magnetic algorithms for detecting and identifying targets of interest. Under DARP auspices, invented a magnetic sensor, the MEMS flux concentrator that solves the problem of 1/f noise. Developed and tested several algorithms for locating magnetic items of interest to the Army. Also showed a modulation technique improved the performance of pezioelectric magnetic sensors while working on another DARPA program, Heterostructural Uncooled Magnetic Sensors. Demonstrated that magnetic permeability changes in amorphous material could be used for long term memory storage. Army Research Laboratory Fellow, Fellows committee that selected internal proposals for possible funding, Military Sensor Symposium (MSS) Fellow, Vice Chairman of MSS Symposia, Contract Officer Representative for the Spin Transfer Torque (STT) RAM DARPA program. STT RAM may become an important energy efficient technology for storing information.

Section HeadNaval Research Laboratory Sep 1980 - Sep 2000Washington D.C. Metro AreaStudy of highly correlated electron systems, nanomaterials, and metal matrix composites. Coedited and wrote portions of a book, Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications published by IOP that provides a broad introduction to the field. Discovered the first or one of first examples of self assembly in nanomaterials. It was found that molybdenum nano cubes formed during sputtering self- arranged into larger 3x3x3 cubes. This discovery was published in Science in 1991. -
Staff PositionEnergy Conversion Devices Sep 1979 - Sep 1980Troy, MichiganDevelopment of amorphous superconductors with higher superconducting transition temperatures for power transmission -
ConsultantArgonne National Laboratory Nov 1970 - Sep 1979Argonne, IllinoisStudied Kondo systems using specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurement. Used specific heat measurements of confirm the number of states in the energy gap first observed by my electron tunneling measurements at IBM. -
Associate Professor, Physics DepartmentUniversity Of Illinois At Chicago Sep 1968 - Sep 1979Chicago, IllinoisStudied strongly correlated electron systems, supervised gradate research of several students. Bob Majewski received his Ph, D under my supervision. Showed, using neutron scattering measurement, that the spacial distribution of a dilute atom is not altered when it goes into the Kondo state at low temperatures. -
Member Of The Technical StaffIbm Watson Research Center Sep 1965 - Aug 1968Yorktown Height, NyUsed electron tunneling measurement to study of gapless superconductivity, discovery of anomalous gapless superconductivity, It was found that a small depression of the superconducing transition temperature of lanthanum, caused by alloying with cerium, made it a gapless superconductor. Played a major role in establishing research on concentrated Kondo systems by suggesting that the element cerium was Kondo system. Prior to this suggestion, it was believed that the Kondo effect could only occur in dilute alloys. Subsequent work supported the correctness of this suggestion.
