Alan spent 19 years in manufacturing with LGG Charlesworth Ltd, recognised nationally for its approach to management style and culture. As Director of Quality & Business Development, Alan introduced company-wide improvement initiatives, such BS 5750 in 1986 and Business Excellence in 1995. Alan was instrumental in the development of plastics processing NVQs and implemented NVQs throughout the business, delivering training and conducting over 500 assessments. Alan's approach led to achievement of IIP in 1993 and in 1996 he gained a National Commendation as a Key Crusader for Investors in People. Alan became one of 70 National hosts for the national campaign 'Inside UK Enterprise'. Alan delivered over 100 benchmarking visits focusing on the practical application of organisational improvement and people issues. Seconded to the DTI Innovation Unit in 1998 as a Senior Industrialists, Alan worked with the DTI to forge and implement the National and International Innovation Best Practice agenda and was instrumental in the design of the Business Performance Diagnostic, a tool used by over 7000 businesses and delivered through Business Link.. In March 2007, an Innovation Toolkit co-designed by Alan and funded by DfES, was launched to all secondary schools across England, followed by regional training sessions for Head Teachers and Teachers.
