All these have some grounding in how good you are at what you do, and how much difference you make.The advantage of being a professional is that it gives you a clear domain – you know your field, hopefully you enjoy it too and you are well rewarded for being good at it and improving, which helps you achieve other things you want in life.The challenge of being a professional comes when you want something to change. When you want more than has been possible so far.As you progress in your career, more of what you want to achieve involves change, and trying to make that happen with and through other people. Change means exploring new possibilities, with people who see things differently, often under pressure. It gets messy.When things are changing, situations become ambiguous. Conversations get tense. Progress gets difficult. And you get frustrated, angry, anxious or a dozen other variations on uncomfortable. There’s enough friction and tension. You want to unlock other possibilities.I started my career as a professional engineer, but wanted more. I tried being an IT professional, and there was still a gap. Eventually I discovered the worlds of leadership, innovation, change – situations where people who were really good at their job met problems when dealing with messy challenges and even messier people. I went there because I had those same problems myself, wanted answers, and couldn’t find them. After years of research, separating out the nonsense from the things that work, I've developed my own principles for unsticking things, people and yourself when life get messy.
