Profile bio

About Alan Blount

I have been a web application developer since '97 and I still enthusiastically love it. Seriously, how lucky are we devs? We get to play with complicated puzzles. Sometimes the puzzles are code, sometimes specifications/design, hardware, communication... In the new world of Gen AI and ML, statistics, data, and eval are the puzzles to solve and stitching together LLM Applications is the newly emerging craft - we're figuring it out together. It's all interesting, impactful, and gives us opportunities for creativity and growth. We are the modern day equivalent to master-carpenters, and though our tools are different, the craft is similar.I enjoy teaching and getting people excited about technologies. I don't want to sell anything, but if I genuinely believe in something, I enjoy talking about it (often too much). I have spoken at conferences and meetups and enjoy giving technical workshops and teaching classes. I find it very rewarding to mentor aspiring developers. I want to empower others, to have careers better than they thought possible. The languages I use regularly are Python, JavaScript (NodeJS/React/etc), Elixir, and a smattering of several others (Go, Rust, ???). I'm an open-source advocate, a framework evangelist, a TDD/BDD pusher, and I love refactoring. I often recommend serverless functions and micro-services (but not always, and often not at scale due to costs). I also like to get off screens and go outside. For project management, I'm Agile-ish: short iterative cycles and close coupling with product owners, end users, designers, and developers. Communication is often the biggest hurdle. I enjoy building a team of developers, with a culture of excitement, engagement, candor, inclusion, and growth. Over the years I have come to highly value both team culture and leadership.More buzzwords: Git, agile/scrum, devops, Debian/Ubuntu, Docker/Kubernetes, HA & autoscaling, GCP/AWS-EC2/RSC/Lambda/etc, CI/CD, Metrics/Logging, profiling/optimization (backend & frontend), REST/GraphQL/WebSocket, NoSQL/SQL/GraphDB/ES/... Training. My ideal roles = "CTO, Tech Lead, Developer Advocate, PM"
