From 2000 through the end of 2015 only two AIA Architectural Design Awards, (i.e. awards for work in Northeast Texas adjudicated by established architects from other regions in Texas) were won by the firm and both were for my design work, the only principal in the firm ever to do so. My two ex-partners planned my retirement and bought me out at the end of 2015 and, a year after I left the firm, it changed its name and is no longer the biggest firm in Northeast Texas.

I was offered a job as architect and Computer Operations / CAD System manager by what was then Eubanks Harris Architects. I was the first architect (other than the owners) employed by the firm and was the most experienced employee at the time, having a wide range of skills. As the CAD / Computer Systems manager I took the CAD system, which was a disorganized mess in the stone age, and organized it and created a system for us that was second to none in Texas. After a few years, was able to buy-in and become one of the owner/principals of the company.

At the end of my second year of my B Arch degree at Wits University, I was offered a fully paid scholarship by Protekon in Johannesburg. The scholarship included a job for me upon graduation which I started in November 1982. I worked with a wonderful group of people and had amazing design experience as a young architect. In 1983 our office moved into the world of desktop computing and I was appointed to investigate and implement a desktop computer system to assist us in office management. In about 1984 the company investigated and entered the world of CAD and purchased the largest Prime Medusa mini-computer based CAD installation in the Southern hemisphere costing $250,000 per seat. I was appointed by the Director of Building Services, Peter Basset, to learn, oversee, setup and implement the architectural use of the system at our head office and to train employees in its use. I did this in addition to my other roles as architect. Thus, I have been involved in setting up and managing CAD systems in major installations since about 1984.

I grew up in a wonderful country in Africa that was attacked and overthrown by terrorists backed by the Soviet Union and Communist China. Immediately upon completing high school all white males were required to do military service as we had a terrorist war going on. I served in the operational area, on the ground, looking for the enemy and I got blown up by an anti-tank landmine.
