Highlights of the meeting included:Tour of Hanson Aggregate's Santee Operation and the colocated Sycamore Landfill and Hanson's Carroll Canyon facility; Community Service Project with the Navy Seabees of ACB-1; Speakers from the Industry including NSSGA Chairman William Schneider, President and CEO of Knife River Corporation; 2009 Barry K. Wendt Memorial Award Randy Kremer, Vice President of Granite Construction; NSSGA Treasurer Anne Lloyd, Executive Vice President and CFO of Martin Marietta Materials; and Joy Wilson, President and CEO of the NSSGA. Other topics included safety and health in the industry, permitting in California by Granite Construction, Web 2.0, merger and acquisition activity in the aggregate industry, and a congressional update by Rep. Ken Calvert (R) 44th District of California.

2009 Chairman30Th Annual Memphis Mineral, Fossil, And Jewelry Show Apr 2008 - May 2009Lead a ten person team to plan the 30th Annual Memphis Mineral, Fossil, & Jewelry Show (April 25-26, 2009, Agricenter International, Memphis, TN, produced by the Memphis Archaeological & Geological Society). Successfully branded the show as "The Earth Wide Open". The Show is a commercial "rock show", contracting 30 dealers from around the U.S., who sell high quality minerals, fossils, jewelry, beads, lapidary products, and other earth science related materials. The Show is open to the public and in addition to the commercial aspects offers earth science education experiences through a variety of demonstrations, exhibits, and professional speakers. Our team succeeded in moving the show to its new location at the Agricenter International, on budget, while experiencing increased attendence over fifty percent.

Current membership is over 250. The objectives of the Society are in part to promote an active interest in earth science, archaeology and the lapidary arts in the Mid-South by conducting public programs for scientific and educational purposes. The Memphis Mineral, Fossil, and Jewelry Show is the Society’s largest single annual event. The Society meets every month with both adult and youth programs and takes field trips on a regular basis for the purpose of collecting and/or education.
