I am Professor (emeritus) of Medical Informatics in the School of Computer Science at University of Manchester. I an now retired from full time work at the University although I still work with WHO on making ICD-11 an electronic as well as paper resource and on harmonising it with SNOMED CT. On occasion I also do other consulting in my areas of expertise. My research interests are in practical support of patient care, knowledge representation, and user interface design. Much of my work has been in medical terminologies and ontologies. From 2006-2011 I lead a major collaboration with Siemens Health on context sensitive clinical documentation systems based around a kernel implemented in OWL. Projects whose funding has been completed include a collaboration with Stanford University to develop the Protégé-OWL environment and an industrial collaboration with CIS-Informatics of Glasgow on intelligent questionnaires for pre-anaesthesia assessment
