Employed for 15 months as a Mechanical Engineering Co-op Student at the construction site of a combined cycle natural gas power plant. Some examples of projects I worked on and responsibilities I had are listed below:-Supervision and planning of the installation of components of the General Electric 7FA gas turbine-Inspections of welds and installations as part of Quality Control-Piping installation and design for systems such as instrument air, and natural gas heating-Organization of welding of specialty alloy pipes, including the procurement of welding materials and the assignment of heat treatment procedures-Analysis and creation of engineering drawings-Interaction with construction workers in the role of a managerOne key concept that this experience emphasized was the importance of standardization in the engineering field. I learned through various projects how the importance of our engineering education is to allow us to understand what the most important design or project considerations are. Often the constraints of any one of these considerations are set by regulations or standards depending on the application – for example a CSA code for installing small bore gas piping, or an ASTM standard for material property regulation. I was able to be part of many engineering projects from start to finish. This was valuable in that it gave me the perspective that allows me to plan out an entire project. This planning is important, from the recognition of the problem through to the design, procurement of materials, and allocation of installation workforce.
